Get ready to be acquainted with the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling with the first-look photos for Netflix’s latest original series, GLOW.
Pitched as a half-hour comedy series, the female-fronted wrestling show first made waves late last year, when former Community star Alison Brie signed on to headline. She’ll play Ruth Wilder, an out-of-work, struggling actress in 1980s Los Angeles who finds one last shot at stardom in the unlikeliest of places: the wrestling ring. Also starring Betty Gilpin, Britney Young, Jackie Tohn, and Marc Maron, Netflix’s 10-part effort mines inspiration from the original GLOW, a professional women’s wrestling TV series that began life in ’86. As you’ll no doubt glean from the images above, the dramedy retains that period setting, as Larson and Co. begin their arduous training regime.
Promising big hair and even bigger body slams, today’s reveal is surely the suitably glittery primer for GLOW‘s first trailer, which ought to be online in the coming weeks. Until then, Netflix’s official logline sheds some light on the rags-to-riches story that awaits Brie Larson’s down-and-out actress. Working alongside 12 Hollywood misfits, Ruth “also has to compete with Debbie Eagan (Betty Gilpin) a former soap actress who left the business to have a baby, only to be sucked back into work when her picture-perfect life is not what it seems. And at the wheel is Sam Sylvia (Marc Maron), a washed-up, B-movie director who now must lead this group of women on the journey to wrestling stardom.”
Hatched by Liz Flahive (Homeland) and Carly Mensch, look for all 10 episodes of GLOW to premiere on June 23rd. Other Netflix originals booked in for an early summer window include the fifth season of Orange is the New Black – the ladies of Litchfield Penitentiary will return on June 9th.
