It looks like Netflix has no intention of slowing down the Money Heist hype train anytime soon. The Spanish crime drama series was a smash hit among international audiences, who were drawn in by the ingenious cat-and-mouse game played by the Professor (Álvaro Morte) and Inspector Raquel Murillo (Itziar Ituño). Despite how interesting and beloved these characters are, it was actually the narcissistic robber Andrés de Fonollosa (Pedro Alonso) that stole the show.
Perhaps for his ruthlessness, his relationship with his brother, or his character development, Andrés — best known by his alias Berlin — became a fan favorite in the series. This naturally led to the shattering of millions of hearts when the character met his end in season two, but fortunately, that wouldn’t be the last time fans saw Berlin. In the remaining seasons of the show, the robber made frequent appearances in flashbacks, as Money Heist explored Berlin’s life before the heist on the Royal Mint of Spain – particularly his relationships with Palermo (Rodrigo the la Serna) and his son Rafael (Patrick Criado). Although Money Heist has come to an end, there is plenty more of Berlin’s story left to tell.
In Nov. 2021, during a special event with the show’s cast in Madrid, Netflix announced that a spinoff focused on Berlin was in the works. On Feb. 7, 2023, the streaming platform unveiled the spinoff’s first teaser trailer, and with it, gave viewers an idea of when Berlin can be expected to hit the platform.
When will Berlin come out and what will it be about?
Although an exact release date is yet to be provided by Netflix, fans can rest assured that Berlin is coming out in 2023. The spinoff is scheduled to premiere sometime in December, and will give viewers a better understanding of its troubled protagonist.
Naturally, because the character canonically dies during the Mint of Spain robbery, Berlin will serve as a prequel to Money Heist, exploring the robber’s earlier days. During Netflix’s 2022 Tudum event, Alex Pina — writer of the show — shared that “this is going to be a trip throughout the golden years of the character, when he was stealing all over Europe, madly in love.”
At the time of writing, not much information about the show has been revealed, however, a new set of characters is promised to join the story. Among those are Keila (Michelle Jenner), Cameron (Begoña Vargas), Roi (Julio Peña), Damián (Tristán Ulloa), and Bruce (Joel Sánchez). There is a possibility that a few familiar faces from Money Heist will make appearances, but nothing has been confirmed thus far.
When the time comes, Berlin will be available for streaming exclusively on Netflix.
