In the season 1 finale, Rick and his group made their escape from the Center for Disease Control after the self-destruct sequence had been set. The Center’s only surviving staff member, Dr. Edwin Jenner, decided to stay and go down with the ship, but showed the gang the way out first. Rick thanked Jenner, telling himĀ he’s grateful for the opportunity to live on. The good doctor’s response?Ā “The day will come when you won’t be.”

Using this quote as the title for the premiere is clearly a nodĀ to Rick’s state of mind after watching one of his best friends brutally beaten to death by Negan, which happened in the season 6 finale. We won’t actually find out who wound up on the receiving end of Lucille until the show returns in a couple of weeks, but there are plenty of fan theories and clues doing the rounds to keep the speculation flowing until then.

The synopsis, meanwhile, is not at all revealing, but does serve as a chilling reminder of what’s in store for the protagonistsĀ (and us fans) when The Walking Dead returns on October 23. Check it out below and let us know what you think.

Last season ended with Rick and our group kneeling helplessly before Negan and his group. What Negan does will haunt those who survive forever.
