Ever since the identity of Negan’s unfortunate victim in the season 6 finale of AMC’s The Walking Dead was kept hidden from fans, there’s been rampant speculation as to which member of Rick’s group is going to wind up getting “Lucille-d” in next week’s season 7 premiere. In the comics it’s Glenn, but because that character’s demise was already flirted with earlier on in the last season, many viewers theorize that it’ll be someone else – or, that poor ol’ Glenn won’t be the only casualty.
The show has altered pretty much every other major character death from the source material up to this point, so Glenn being switched out for someone else does make sense – but as far as the double whammy theory goes, Walking Dead co-creator and executive producer Robert Kirkman seems to have debunked it during an interview with THR:
I don’t know that our audience is necessarily bloodthirsty enough to be wanting to hear that there’s another death. One death should be enough for this audience and one death will definitely have the affect that we’re looking for. It will certainly set the stage for a very exciting season. It’s going to be a rough, rough, rough episode emotionally.
Knowing what’s coming and knowing what happens, it’s really hard for me to watch. We’ve gotten to know all these characters over so many years and to see not only the one that dies but how it affects all the other characters involved? You can feel their emotions because you know their relationships and what they’re experiencing. It’s a really gut-wrenching episode. I don’t think anyone will be hungry for more blood when the episode airs.
From the sounds of that, it will only be one of our heroes that’ll be meeting their maker next week, but that doesn’t mean Negan won’t claim another victim as the season progresses, of course.
Be sure to tune into the season 7 premiere of The Walking Dead this Sunday to find out once and for all who Negan selected to exact his gruesome retribution on.
