The shocking finale of season two of HBO’s Boardwalk Empire blindsided fans in a brave and violent move that few networks would ever have the courage to attempt, let alone pull off as well as they did. With that one surprising act, season three is open to explore the full bloody reign of Nucky Thompson.
Today, the show received a fantastic trailer promising that the flood of violence is not soon to ebb.
With Steve Buscemi’s Nucky Thompson committing his very first (personally carried-out) act of murder in season two, this new trailer promises that he will not longer merely be the man behind the curtain. Also looking to have accepted the sordid life she’s living is Kelly Macdonald’s Margaret Schroeder, the wife of our favourite anti-hero gangster who is not only encouraging violence but actually wielding a shotgun in one scene.
With a number of competitors in the bootlegging racket “removed” a new threat has unveiled itself in the form of Gyp Rosetti (Bobby Cannavale), a rival gangster none too pleased that Nucky has opted to sell only to one buyer to minimize his exposure.
With returning faces Michael Kenneth Williams, Michael Shannon, Shea Whingham, Michael Stuhlbarg and others also swirling around the violent affairs of prohibition-era Atlantic City, Boardwalk Empire promises a thrilling return.
By far, Boardwalk Empire remains one of the best shows on television and easily one of the densest, most intriguing and consistently well-acted bits of drama ever to hit the small screen – a lush gangster epic so high in quality that it’s seemingly made for a theatrical release.
Be sure to tune into HBO on September 16 for the season three premiere.
