With the previous two seasons having seen some awesome crossovers between The Flash and Arrow, we all knew this year’s mega event, that’s set to also include Supergirl and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, would have to be much more grandiose – even cosmic.

It comes as no surprise that the creative minds behind these fan favorite series will not disappoint and have pulled a most unexpected ace from their sleeves in the form of the Dominators, who will serve as the antagonists for this unprecedented four-show, four-night crossover.

Executive producer Marc Guggenheim had this to say regarding their inclusion and where the comic book inspiration came from:

“This year, for our mega ‘Arrowverse’ crossover, we’re taking inspiration from a DC crossover from the late 1980s known as Invasion!, which featured an alien race called the Dominators, who’d previously vexed the Legion of Superheroes. We’re using cutting edge prosthetics and computer effects to achieve a feature film-quality look which is faithful to Invasion! artist Todd McFarlane’s interpretation of the characters.”

Furthermore, Entertainment Weekly describes the threat as follows:

In the comics, specifically in Invasion!, the Dominators are a technologically advanced alien race who form a coalition with various other races to invade Earth all in the name of eliminating the threat posed by unpredictable metahumans. To note, the Daxamites were part of the coalition, and the newly arrived Mon-El (Chris Wood) on Supergirl hails from Daxam. Coincidence?

If used on television as they were in the comics, this should not only make for some explosive action sequences, but also create some interesting talking points as to what other alien races from around the universe could eventually be in tow. Plus, it will likely flesh out Mon-El’s story, a hero who once headlined the flagship Superman comic a few years back, if you can believe that.

The timing of this may or may not be coincidental as the Dominators were recently name dropped in Green Lanterns #7. Their impending reintroduction into the comic book medium may not only serve as a primer for unfamiliar fans, but also may be a strategic move by DC and WB to have them permeate public consciousness on multiple fronts.

Expect the crossover event to begin in either late November or early December, with Supergirl serving as somewhat of a prologue before things kick into high gear on The Flash.
