Reviews can be a fickle thing, or at least they are if you put much stock into them. This time yesterday, Tom Holland’s Apple TV series The Crowded Room had snatched the unwanted distinction of being the worst-reviewed project of his entire career on Rotten Tomatoes, but that’s no longer the case.
In fact, it’s currently sitting at its highest rating yet on the aggregation site, even if a 22 percent approval rating is hardly going to turn the tide of apathy. However, it has racked up a 96 percent audience score despite the first three episodes only premiering today, so maybe the actor’s fans are doing their best to try and average things out.
Either way, outside of the presence of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Spider-Man in his latest role, morbid curiosity seems to have been drawing people to The Crowded Room in their numbers. There’s a lot of folks out there checking it out for the sole purpose of discovering whether or not it’s as bad as everyone’s been led to believe, and the findings have been mixed.
Of course, the last show that social media audiences decided to investigate based on scathing reviews was HBO’s The Idol, and in that instance many were left shocked by just how awful it ended up being. The jury remains out on The Crowded Room for the time being, but one positive in the swirling sea of critical sh*t is that Holland is at least being praised for his dedicated and committed performance.
