Moving into the final two episodes of this season of The Vampire Diaries, the entire vampire-friendly coalition needs to be focused on the pending doom. There isn’t anymore time to worry about Elena’s mental condition. This side show with Katherine will have to either be quick and painful, or wait until next season to come to fruition. Now that none of the main characters will be bound to Mystic Falls under the false pretense of being a normal high school student, it would be nice to see them do a little travelling. Caroline (Candice Accola) can run off to New Orleans to flounce all over Hayley’s (Phoebe Tonkin) dreams of happily ever after with Klaus (Joseph Morgan) and the baby, and the rest of the gang can chase Katherine to the ends of the Earth. Perhaps even Tyler (Michael Trevino) can join back in for the fun.
It has been a bumpy ride for everyone this season and there’s so much left undone. Elena isn’t the only one that has come undone this season. Clearly, Silas has made it difficult for even the mentally competent to grasp onto what’s real and what’s not. We watched Klaus try to dig out an imaginary white oak stake from his back not long ago. In this episode of The Vampire Diaries, Caroline reacted to being staked through the heart. Bonnie (Kat Graham) may think that she has everything under control, but it doesn’t appear that way. What was she thinking teaming up with Katherine? I thought it was common sense at this point that she’s untrustworthy. After they deal with an invincible Silas, will Katherine be the next invincible up to bat? And, there’s still the question of who’s going to make it to see next season.
In the past, there’s always been some major death saved for the very end. Last season it was Alaric (Matt Davis) and Elena, since technically she did die. We’ve already had an abundant share of shock-and-awe death this season. However, it would be an interesting twist if somehow the surprise wasn’t a death, but was a rebirth of sorts – as in Elena becoming human again. I don’t really see that as likely until she deals with Katherine. Otherwise, that would make her all too vulnerable once again. Yet, all season long it seemed to be the thing that was missing from the show, human Elena anchoring the supernatural elements – a balance.
