Have you recovered from that yet? Probably a silly question – what went down on the season 7 premiere of The Walking Dead will surely be etched in fans’ minds for quite a while. The season 6 finale left us on a highly controversial cliffhanger, but we finally discovered which member(s) of Ricks’ group were introduced to Lucille during “The Time will Come When You Won’t Be,” and it was not for the faint of heart.
The cast and crew had done a pretty good job in their attempts to misdirect viewers from the identity of Negan’s victim, with Robert Kirkman himself seemingly confirming that there was only going to be one death in a recent interview – but, in the end it turned out to be the characters most of us figured it would be: Abraham first, then, mirroring what goes down in the comics, Glenn.
The latter’s demise was particularly difficult to watch, and the grisly depiction of his murder has come in for some backlash on social media. Horrific things are going to happen on a horror series, but even I have to admit that this was especially nihilistic.
Next week’s installment, “The Well,” shifts the focus to Carol and Morgan as they adapt to life in The Kingdom, which is under the rule of a man named Ezekiel. Hopefully he’ll turn out to be a more benevolent leader than Negan… and will be less fond of caving people’s skulls in.
