The Walking Dead Creator Addresses Season 6 Finale Backlash

Though the uproar has died down a bit since, a lot of fans were very upset with the season 6 finale of AMC's The Walking Dead. The episode ended with a group of our main characters lined up, with one of 'em clearly destined to meet a grisly end at the hands (well, bat) of Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and his weapon of choice, Lucille.

Though the uproar has died down a bit since, a lot of fans were very upset with the season 6 finale of AMC’s The Walking Dead. The episode ended with a group of our main characters lined up, with one of ’em clearly destined to meet a grisly end at the hands (well, bat) of Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and his weapon of choice, Lucille.

This is something that had been built up for months, but at the very last second we shifted to the camera POV, so nobody got to see who Negan actually wound up bludgeoning. Cliffhangers are nothing new of course, but many felt that by showing the deed while withholding the identity of the victim, the showrunners were trying to have it both ways, and sacrificed maximum dramatic impact just to ensure return viewers.

Many have weighed in on this since, but now we have a statement from the creator of The Walking Dead comic series, Robert Kirkman. Here’s what he had to say on the matter:

The speculation, the frustration, the possibilities, the theories… honestly, in my mind… that stuff is FUN. I honestly feel like that’s something fun for the fans to do during the break. Last season’s finale will lead right into the new season, with a twist that fans probably won’t see coming. We weren’t trying to drive you crazy, and we certainly weren’t trying to FORCE you to come back for season 7. We hope you were always planning on doing that and still plan on doing that.
