The Vampire Diaries Review: “Because The Night” (Season 4, Episode 17)

A change of scenery, a tangible lead toward Katherine (Nina Dobrev) and the cure, and a brainwashed Bonnie (Kat Graham) - what more can you ask for in an episode of The Vampire Diaries? If you were looking for anything that might resemble familiarity, than this episode was probably not what you were expecting. If there's anything more annoying than a predictable, self-righteous Elena (also Dobrev), it's a vengeful, superficial vampire with tunnel vision bent on messing things up for everyone she doesn't remember she loves.

Damon, on the other hand, put himself in particularly bad light in order to make a point to Elena about the dangers of losing your humanity. I wanted his story to be real because the idea of him having real feelings for someone besides Katherine and Elena made me hopeful. Hopeful that he hasn’t spent his entire vampire life pining over virtually the same girl. Lexie (Arielle Kebbel) has always represented this flicker of hope for Stefan in his darkest hour, and it would have been nice if the same thing had been true about Damon. Whether he wants to admit it or not, it’s pretty obvious that she had an impact in the end.

Too bad for Elena that it doesn’t look like his story had any real impact on her. It might be too much to hope that she doesn’t make a mistake that she won’t be able to take back before this is all over. Even so, she won’t be alone in her guilt.

It only took a New York minute for things to get royally screwy back in Mystic Falls. As if our favorite character didn’t have enough to deal with now the Elena has gone rogue with only Rebekah (Claire Holt) to keep her in check, but now The Vampire Diaries has pretty much become a breeding ground for disappointments. In a misguided attempt to save Bonnie from herself, or the self that Silas (David Alpay) has turned her into, Caroline (Candice Accola) has completed the expression triangle. With Klaus (Joseph Morgan) and Stefan (Paul Wesley) content with sitting on the sidelines and watching the witch coven take down a power crazy Bonnie, Caroline followed her instincts to protect her friend which ultimately led to the final massacre – the death of 12 witches.

This might be a good time for Caroline to consider flipping her own switch. The love of her life, Tyler (Michael Trevino), has been forced to spend the foreseeable future running for his life, and she just killed 12 innocent people. As if the odds weren’t already skewed in Silas’s favor, Caroline handed him the power to bring back every supernatural entity from forever all on a silver dagger. Let me remind you that this isn’t because he wants to be reunited with any of them, but all so that he can finally die and cross over completely to his beloved – literally leaving hell on Earth behind him. What is even more disturbing about the entire situation is that Bonnie doesn’t remember anything about it. The last memory she had was in the cave on the island with a living, breathing Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen). Did anyone else tear up when they realized that Stefan was going to have to break the news to her all over again? Hopefully, I’m not the only one raising my hand right now.

With Silas desperate for the cure and Klaus looking like he may have finally met his match, his exit is appearing to fall even further into place. Judging from the previews for next week’s episode of The Vampire Diaries, it doesn’t look like either Klaus or Caroline will be in a comforting mood. In fact, we may see a whole new side of Caroline in the upcoming episodes as well. Maybe the dark side is a bit more appealing to her than she originally realized.

How do you think things will play out in the next few episodes of The Vampire Diaries? Will Elena finally be the one to take down Katherine? Does Caroline have any compassion left or is Klaus just a terrible person that does terrible things? How will Bonnie handle her grief now that she knows that Jeremy is gone? Let us know in the comment section below what you think is going to happen!

Until next episode.
