The Vampire Diaries didn’t make us wait long to see how the whole expelling Katherine (Nina Dobrev) from Elena’s (also Dobrev) body scenario would play out, but that doesn’t mean fans got everything they wanted out of it. Even though Dobrev is back to finally being a solo-act, her single remaining character isn’t going to be herself for a while. In a desperate final act, Katherine made a play to ensure that the love of her life would remain out of reach for Elena, and anyone else who may think about batting their eyelashes his way.
Katherine proves in her final moments to be the same complex character we’ve become accustomed to over the past five seasons. Her last decisions were both incredibly touching and equally vindictive, securing her place in somewhere presumably more unpleasant than the other side. Even in death, Katherine Pierce will not be reunited with her daughter, or anyone else of the supernatural persuasion that she may have been fond of over the years.
The idea of Katherine simply riding off into the sunset of everlasting purgatory may have been an acceptable notion when she was dying of old age, but not after hijacking Elena’s body. with that, she effectively sealed her fate. This goodbye, however, seemed much more appropriate. Going out without having the last word, or in a heap of mostly well-wishes, didn’t match the way she lived her life, and let’s face it, shouldn’t have been an option for her death.
If there is one thing about the circumstances surrounding Katherine’s death that may have left you conflicted, it might have been that Nadia (Olga Fonda) also made an exit on this episode of The Vampire Diaries. Nadia definitely got the short stick when it comes to her life. She spent over 500 years searching for her mother, and even when Nadia was on her death bed, Katherine put her own agenda before her only daughter. The grand gesture of letting Stefan (Paul Wesley) kill her (err, put her out of her misery) was overshadowed by her petty agenda to leave Elena with a parting gift, forever cementing her evil image.
