The Vampire Diaries Review: “Dead Man On Campus” (Season 5, Episode 8)

The Vampire Diaries is moving along unusually quick this season. They've already tied up one major storyline and Silas (Paul Wesley), Quetsiya/Tessa (Janina Gavankar) and Amara (Nina Dobrev) are all dead - although TVD history has taught us that doesn't always mean they're gone for good (Both Bonnie and Jeremy, who are main characters, have come back from the dead). Now, we're rapidly moving into the underlying Augustine vampire plot that has been setting itself up since the beginning of the season.

If you want to look for a silver lining to a Jesse-free future, it’s that he won’t be around to experience what’s coming next. Every threat that comes their way is worse than the last one. Dr. Maxfield doesn’t look like he’ll be any exception. Despite being attractive and having a sense of goodwill, he is also part of a much larger conspiracy. One which apparently Damon (Ian Somerhalder) has some past familiarity with.

Knowing that he’s encountered this particular group before, Damon didn’t exactly seem prepared for what he was walking into. If Augustine is somehow tied to this specific university, and someone is conducting experiments on vampires, it doesn’t seem like a giant leap of the imagination to assume that he was walking right back in to something that probably wasn’t a highlight for him the first time around.

Damon may be known for being characteristically impulsively and thinking later (or never), but he’s generally not caught so off guard. The Vampire Diaries is becoming a virtual game of ‘Ring Around the Rosie’ with who needs to be saved next. Damon getting himself thrown in a cage almost seems timely. If you’re keeping track, it seems like it should be his turn, everyone else has taken one – even Katherine (Nina Dobrev). It shouldn’t be too long before we find out what it means to be an Augustine vampire, but I’m guessing it’s not something Damon would brag about.
