Warning: Spoilers for Secret Invasion to follow.
We’re officially two-thirds of the way through Secret Invasion, and frankly, we’re not sure how much more our heartstrings can take. Maria Hill’s demise is a pill that some of us are still swallowing even now, and even though it was clear as day that G’iah wouldn’t meet her fate after getting shot last episode, the suddenness of it all made for more than sufficient whiplash.
But episode 4, which premiered earlier today, ended on a note that just might sting even harder than Maria’s death; in the heat of a standoff between Gravik’s sect of Skrulls and American soldiers called to protect President Ritson, the show’s antagonist managed to get a hold of a wounded Talos, staring Nick Fury right in the eye as he plunged a blade through the heart of his friend, causing him to fall limply to the ground.
After G’iah, our first instinct might be to hope for another fake-out, but unlike her – who we could reasonably assume had access to a fail-safe in Extremis – it doesn’t look like there’s many ways out for Talos here, and Twitter isn’t afraid to hide their devastation.
As if the simple act of murdering Talos didn’t hurt us enough, the fact that the last conversation he had with his daughter was less than ideal adds more than a bit of salt to this particular wound; indeed, it looks like G’iah’s prophesized emotional arc is about to heat up in a big way.
At this point, we’re all but certain that Secret Invasion has reached its limit on emotional ravaging; surely they can’t do any worse than murdering Talos outside of what will no doubt be the resulting sorrow from G’iah, but we won’t let our guard down just yet.
Secret Invasion is now streaming on Disney Plus. New episodes will release every Wednesday until the series finale on July 26.
