The New Founding Fathers of America are headed to television – albeit with a twist.

Deadline is reporting today that Blumhouse Television and Universal are beginning to make serious headway on The Purge TV series, which will carve out an “entirely new chapter in America’s 12 hours of annual lawlessness.”

Perhaps most surprising of all is the fact that The Purge spinoff won’t take place during those infamous 12 hours in which all crime is legalized; instead, Blumhouse Television and Universal plan to “reveal what happens the other 364 days of the year and how that law affects people.” Franchise creator James DeMonaco is in the driving seat for this one, and is expected to write, direct and executive produce the spinoff series moving forward. Little is currently known about the number of episodes Blumhouse has planned – ditto for an exact premiere date – but today’s report also notes that a fourth movie is gestating in the early stages of production.

Whether that embryonic sequel can rope in series stalwart Frank Grillo, though, is another question. The back-to-back punch of Anarchy and 2016’s Election Year ensured Grillo became something of a fan-favorite – a brief, yet memorable appearance as Crossbones in the Marvel Cinematic Universe also helped matters – but with a “reimagining” of hardboiled actioner The Raid cramming up the pipeline, it remains to be seen exactly how The Purge 4 will fall into place. One thing’s for sure: James DeMonaco will be involved in some capacity.

The Purge TV series has officially been given the go-ahead for a 2018 premiere on USA Network and Syfy. It’s still early, early days, but we’ll be bringing you all the latest as this story develops.
