After three terrifying feature films in only four years, the Purge franchise is officially headed to television. And it’s now located its two primary leads.
Deadline has the scoop, revealing that Gabriel Chavarria (East Los High, War For the Planet of the Apes) and Jessica Garza (Modern Family, Pure Genius) have been tapped to headline USA Network and Syfy’s TV rendition of The Purge.
Hatched by franchise creator James DeMonaco and the folks at Blumhouse Television, The Purge TV series will carve out a whole new chapter within America’s 12 hours of annual lawlessness, and we understand it’ll launch in tandem with the fourth movie later this year. So a late summer premiere, perhaps?
On the casting front, Chavarria will play the part of Miguel, the older brother to Garza’s character who’s described as “a U.S. Marine with a hard edge and a noble mission. After receiving a cryptic letter from his little sister, he returns to town on Purge Night — prepared to face the senseless violence in the streets alone in order to protect what he loves most — his family.”
Garza, on the other hand, is “a woman who belongs to a Purge-worshipping cult. Having pledged herself to be sacrificed at the behest of their charismatic leader, Penelope’s faith is tested when she is exposed to the ghastly realities of the Purge.”
On paper, they couldn’t be more different – one’s a former U.S. Marine with no prior knowledge of the Purge, while the other bows before a Purge-worshipping cult. So expect a healthy dose of sibling rivalry once Syfy’s TV spinoff falls into place later in 2018.
Closer to home, Blumhouse and franchise creator James DeMonaco will welcome viewers back to ground zero with The First Purge on July 4th, before Syfy’s spinoff Purge TV series explores what happens on the other 364 days of the year in a society where everyone turns a blind eye to full-blown mayhem for a 12-hour period.
