The Mandalorian season three premiere mostly checked in with several of your old favorites, obviously including Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and Grogu, but also recurring guest star Greef Karga (Carl Weathers). At the same time, though, it added some fresh characters into the mix, including a new thorn in the side of Mando and his adorable charge who will no doubt continue to cause trouble as the season progresses. Namely, pirate king Gorian Shard.
Apart from wondering why he looks so much like DC’s Swamp Thing, the other burning question viewers might have about Shard is who’s voicing him. The answer is Nonso Anozie, an underrated genre favorite whose arrival in the Star Wars saga is just the latest beloved universe that the actor has joined, following on from roles in Game of Thrones, Doctor Who, and the DC franchise.
British actor Anozie can be seen in such movies as Conan the Barbarian, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, and Cinderella, but he’s probably best known for his prolific TV work. In 2012, he appeared in five episodes of Game of Thrones season two as Xaro Xhoan Daxos before voicing Hydroflax in 2015’s Doctor Who Christmas special. In 2022, he also provided the voice of the Wyvern in The Sandman. His most notable on-screen turn, though, is likely as Tommy Jepperd in Netflix’s Sweet Tooth.
There aren’t many actors out there who can tick off so many legendary sci-fi and fantasy franchises on the same resume. All Anozie needs is to acquire some kind of role in the Marvel and Star Trek universes and he’d pretty much have a complete set.
The Mandalorian season three continues Wednesdays on Disney Plus.
