This article contains spoilers for The Mandalorian season 3, episode 6
We’re still recovering from the nutty celebrity cameos in this week’s episode of The Mandalorian, but it’s worth taking some time to address the big plot development that took place in the final moments of the episode. Since the season two finale, trouble has been brewing between Din Djarin and Bo-Katan over possession of the Darksaber.
This legendary weapon is of huge significance to all Mandalorians and made its live-action debut being wielded by Moff Gideon in the season one finale. Din won the blade in combat against Gideon in the season two finale and soon after tried to give it to Bo-Katan, only to learn ownership can’t simply be given.
Many assumed this would eventually lead to a duel between Bo-Katan and Din, though this week’s episode saw her take it back without a single blow. As many fans had predicted, Din being defeated by a cyborg on Mandalore and Bo-Katan seizing the weapon to save him opens a loophole that lets her take it while maintaining her honor.
But some Star Wars fans think this is ripped straight from Harry Potter — and they aren’t happy about it:
For those not up on Harry Potter lore, the Elder Wand was supposedly created by Death himself, is the most powerful wand to ever exist, and ended up as one of the Deathly Hallows. Its ownership can only be transferred by defeating its current wielder, though “defeating” is rather a grey area.
The similarities to the Darksaber are obvious and fans feel it changing hands on a technicality is anticlimactic:
So was all that time spent watching him master the Darksaber wasted?
Was the technicality even really met?
Specifics aside, it’s looking like Bo-Katan is now being positioned as the official new Mandalore. She’s got her mojo back, witnessed the Mythosaur with her own eyes, and now has the Darksaber back. Presumably, we’ll be returning to Mandalore over the remaining two episodes, though we suspect that the planet’s former inhabitants face a fight to take the planet back. After all, Moff Gideon is still out there somewhere…
