AMC has been playing musical chairs with its mediocre-rated mystery series, The Killing, for the last year or so, but it looks like the show has finally lost its seat on the line-up for good this time.

About a year ago, the network announced that The Killing had not been renewed for season 3. After interest from other medias – notably Netflix and DirectTV – AMC changed its tuned and announced that The Killing would indeed be given a second chance at life.

Season 3 started out with huge numbers, bringing it back to season 1 glory, but the success was short lived. Even though the season finale boasted higher ratings than the previous season, the network has decided to pull the plug. The press statement announcing the decision included some kind words, but didn’t give fans much more than that.

We have made the difficult decision not to move forward with a fourth season of The Killing. We want to thank our great partners at Fox Television Studios, creator Veena Sud, an extraordinary cast and the dedicated fans who watched.

Although The Killing definitely has developed a fanbase over the last three years, the audience seems to quickly lose interest over the course of the season. Ratings for the show on an individual season by season basis noticeably drop from premiere to finale, and even with the revamp, it’s not a huge surprise that the network gave it the ax – again.

This doesn’t necessarily mean the end, however. According to Deadline, FOX TV Studios is currently looking for a new network to house the series. As nice as it would be for fans of television everywhere to believe that a show could get a third chance, for a show as inconsistent as The Killing, it’s unlikely.
