The Flash season 4 ended on another of The CW show’s patented season finale shockers. This time, it was revealed that Jessica Parker Kennedy’s Mystery Girl, who’d popped up several times throughout the run, was actually Nora Allen – Barry and Iris’ daughter from the future. We were left with the pair’s bewildered reaction and Nora’s warning that she had made a big mistake in coming back, suggesting she’d caused some issues in the timeline.
It’s shocking enough for a normal young couple to find out they’re about to have a kid, but that’s nothing compared to finding out your future daughter has traveled back in time to meet you. As one could imagine, then, Barry and Iris will have a hard time adjusting to this situation when The Flash returns in season 5.
Recently, Candice Patton spoke at a panel at the POPSUGAR Playground festival and chatted about how confused the West-Allens will be by the whole thing, saying:
“I mean, I think anyone in that position would be like ‘What the…?’ You know. Because it’s weird, her daughter came back from the future, essentially at the same age that [Iris] is currently. So, it’s super trippy. I think both her and Barry are kinda like ‘What the hell?’”
Like we said, Nora’s return to the past could have messed up the timeline in some major ways – like father, like daughter! – and Patton went on to tease just how things could be changed now that the couple’s speedster daughter has traveled in time. She suggested that she could even, Back to the Future-style, erase herself from existence.
“And that also means that, you know, Iris has to be pregnant at some point. When does that happen? How does this affect the time continuum, if she’s coming back to the past? Could it fudge up whole storylines? Could Barry and I not be together? I have no idea what’ll happen.”
Thankfully, there should be lots of room to explore the West-Allen’s new family dynamic, as Jessica Parker Kennedy was recently announced to be a regular on The Flash in season 5, alongside the newly-promoted Hartley Saywer (who plays Ralph Dibny) and Danielle Nicolet (Cecille Horton). Suffice it to say, there’s lots to look forward to when the Scarlet Speedster races back onto our screens this fall.
