While Fox’s flagship panel and its presentation of Kingsman: The Golden Circle stole headlines left, right, and center, the company also staged a handful of smaller SDCC showcases for some of its other properties. Case in point: The Exorcist.
Featuring a smattering of cast and crew members, the show’s panel took place yesterday evening, where key creative players like Jeremy Slater and executive producer Sean Crouch solicited questions about what The Exorcist season 2 has in store. Spoilers: if you’re at all familiar with Japanese horror, you may recognize the general aesthetic of the show’s sophomore season.
In fact, by relocating to the Pacific Northwest, it’s clear Fox is toying with an anthology format when it comes to The Exorcist, which may well allow the series to succeed where other film-to-TV adaptations (see: Minority Report, 24: Legacy, Emerald City) have failed. And so, gone are Geena Davis, Hannah Kasulka, Brianne Howey, and Alan Ruck, and in their place, the network has recruited the likes of John Cho, Alfonso Herrera, Ben Daniels and Deadpool co-star Brianna Hildebrand for a haunting story involving a foster home for troubled kids.
Per Deadline, executive producer Sean Crouch told those in attendance at SDCC that in The Exorcist‘s second season, “we’re going to see a foster home, a group for troubled kids. John [Cho]’s character is the patriarch, and Brianna [Hildebrand] is one of the kids in his care.”
When it comes to the show’s look and feel, it appears Jeremy Slater and the team have mined inspiration from Japanese horror titles, which will apparently “influence where [The Exorcist] is going this season.” Color us intrigued. Pale, but intrigued.
Going into this season, the reason why we switched it up from an upper-class urban family was to give it a nature look; the blues and greens make it feel more cinematic. It opens the sandbox to play in other types. A lot of Japanese horror is nature-based and that can influence where we’re going this season.
Take a new family and new location and tie them together with a familiar, crippling horror and you’ll have a close approximation of The Exorcist season 2. It’ll kick off via Fox TV on Friday, September 29th, at 9:00-10:00 pm ET/PT.
