Nelson and Murdock, attorneys at law.
It’s a life-long friendship (and underdog law firm) that was practically torn apart during the latter stages of Daredevil season 2, when Foggy (Elden Henson) discovered the truth: Matt Murdock and the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen are one and the same. This realization proved too much for Henson’s supporting player, who swore to never actively support Matt Murdock’s vigilantism in any shape or form. Bad news for Matt, then, and that’s before you consider the fact that Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll) is now in the loop as well.
Between the broken friendship and spiralling love life, it’s clear that Charlie Cox’s Man Without Fear will have his hands full when Daredevil‘s third season premieres in 2018, but those hoping for some form of resolution and/or compromise between Nelson and Murdock ahead of The Defenders needn’t bother; Charlie Cox told those in attendance at San Diego Comic-Con that the rift between Foggy and Matt still exists throughout the course of the show’s eight-episode arc. Couple this with the fact that Marvel and Netflix’s team-up series takes place over a single week and it’s clear that the creative teams will reserve any exposition involving one of The Defenders and their human allies for the forthcoming standalone series.
As reported by Screen Rant, here’s what Charlie Cox had to say when quizzed about Matt and Foggy’s friendship going into The Defenders. Spoilers: it looks certain that we won’t be seeing any drunken flashbacks to the pair’s days in college anytime soon.
That relationship is still fractured. I know that in Defenders — because of the nature of the problem, the nature of the issue, the plot in our show — Foggy has to get on board with Matt and what he can do. And I think he begins to see the benefit of someone like Matt. But that doesn’t detract from the years of lying.
The real healing is going to have to come later. The Defenders takes place in a week, a very small amount of time, you know what I mean? Only so much healing can be done in that time.
All eight episodes of The Defenders will be with us on August 18th. Daredevil, meanwhile, will likely be back on Netflix via his own solo series in 2018, which will also herald new episodes of Luke Cage and Jessica Jones. A second season of Iron Fist is also on the cards, but it’s unclear as yet when Marvel and Netflix plan to bring back Finn Jones’ Danny Rand.
