Teen Wolf Review: “The Overlooked” (Season 3, Episode 10)

There's a lot to say after Teen Wolf dropped that gigantic bomb on us at the close of last week's episode. We now know that Derek's (Tyler Hoechlin) new girlfriend moonlights as the murderous, possibly (er, probably) psychotic Darach. Unfortunately, most of that extended commentary will have to wait for a post-season retrospective because tonight's episode left us with more than enough to say.

There’s a lot to say after Teen Wolf dropped that gigantic bomb on us at the close of last week’s episode. We now know that Derek’s (Tyler Hoechlin) new girlfriend moonlights as the murderous, possibly (er, probably) psychotic Darach. Unfortunately, most of that extended commentary will have to wait for a post-season retrospective because tonight’s episode left us with more than enough to say.

Teen Wolf has consistently been a solid show, but now that MTV has given it a full 24-episode season we are finally getting to see an arc that isn’t limited by such strict time-constraints. That boost in time is most likely to thank for why this episode was, in my opinion, the most intense one we’ve seen to-date.

I think we can all agree that there have been some memorable moments over the past two and half seasons, but nothing that really compares to the drama that was unveiled tonight. And, Teen Wolf sure chose its stage well – torrential downpour, power outages, a recently evacuated hospital. Nothing like a natural-induced crisis to put you in the right state of mind for a thrilling hour of television. If you were looking for the perfect setting for a face-off between the good guys, the bad guys, and the simply misunderstood, you certainly were treated to it in The Overlooked.

We recently relived Derek’s first experience with love, and now we get a front-row seat for the implosion of his latest romance. Granted Miss Blake, or Jennifer, or Julia (Haley Webb) – whatever her name is – does have a compelling back-story, and her oath was sorta on the ‘so determined it’s scary’ side, it doesn’t really take away from the fact that she’s been going around killing innocent people. There’s also the fact that she tried to kill Lydia (Holland Roden), did something horrific to Cora (Adelaide Kane) involving mistletoe, and took Sheriff Stilinski (Linden Ashby) hostage – and now to make everything a bit more urgent, is playing capture the flag with Scott’s (Tyler Posey) mom.

Let’s face it, she practically pushed Scott into Deucalion’s (Gideon Emery) waiting arms. She left him with no other option than to explore the last, and obviously least desirable, one. Derek has already proven that he doesn’t have the know-how or wherewithal to defeat any member of the Alpha-pack, and he hasn’t exactly been much help solving anything sacrifice-related. There’s also the bit about him falling for pretty much the worst supernatural being in Beacon Hills city limits.
