Teen Wolf Review: “Echo House” (Season 3, Episode 20)

Dr. Deaton (Seth Gilliam) may have been able to supress the evil spirit, or Nogitsune, inside Stiles (Dylan O'Brien), but just long enough for a 72 hour psych evaluation. This set the stage to bring us back to the mental institute that was previewed on the last episode of Teen Wolf. There was something about this place that heightened Lydia's (Holland Roden) banshee senses when it seemed like all of Beacon Hills was frantically searching for Stiles. And there's still something mysterious about this facility. The only question is whether or not Stiles will find out what it is before he goes back to being a prisoner in his own body.

Stiles has found himself in some sexually suggestive situations prior to this one, but he was never able to close the deal. Not always for lack of trying either. Remember earlier this season when his date was literally kidnapped in the midst of foreplay? However, he didn’t seem to have any trouble tonight after Malia made the first move.

Out of all the characters on the show, Malia has some potential to play opposite Stiles. She still maintains the same damaged goods motif as all the leads, yet possesses a certain amount of innocence from her unusual childhood. Unfortunately, with Stiles conquering such an important landmark, it also adds fuel to speculation that he won’t make it through the season. This event is Teen Wolf‘s version of a consolation prize – sorry, you didn’t make it to graduation but at least you didn’t die before..

Behind the scenes, Scott (Tyler Posey) and the gang are working their magic to try to figure out a solution that doesn’t involve killing Stiles. With Derek (Tyler Hoechlin) and Argent (JR Bourne) in jail on suspicion of murder, and the sheriff out of town running down his own lead, they are a little shorthanded. Fortunately, that didn’t make much of a difference when it came to their mission of obtaining a scroll that might contain the answer.

The twins have really stepped up and made themselves a vital part of Scott’s pack. With Isaac (Daniel Sharman) out of commission and an unknown threat still out there, he could use all the muscle he can get. The twins definitely pack a punch. Combined with the skills that Alison (Crystal Reed) and Kira (Arden Cho) add, Scott has compiled a decent outfit – but Kincaid was right, where is Scott’s Alpha strength?

Which leads us to the most intriguing part of Echo House, the possibility of Scott going through his own rite of passage – turning Stiles into a werewolf. Turning anyone into a werewolf would count, but turning Stiles to save his life has a certain amount of satisfaction tacked on the end of it. Stiles was there when Scott was bitten, and has stuck by his side through it all. It’s almost poetic.

What do you think of Stiles becoming a werewolf? Do you think that when it comes down to it, that will be the only solution? How are you handling the Stiles/Malia hook-up? Let us know all your Teen Wolf theories in the comment section below!
