Despite the announcement of Supernatural ending with its fifteenth season coming down this past March, I’m not sure if I’ve fully adjusted to the news. Having been on board with the cult favorite horror series since the pilot episode originally aired, it sure will be hard to fill that void left by Sam and Dean Winchester’s adventures. After all, that’s a decade-and-a-half of “saving people and hunting things,” my friends in the “SPN Family.”
As you may have heard, this was a mutual decision made by the producers and series stars Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles. Though I’m sure it was unimaginably difficult for them to make, you have to figure that all of these talented people must call it quits at some time – and move on to other projects. Really, there have probably been numerous gigs Jared and Jensen had to turn down over the years because they were otherwise unavailable.
Believe it or not though, Jensen Ackles himself offered a glimmer of hope while speaking at the Television Critics Association event held this past weekend, saying:
“I’m not ever ready to close doors or burn bridges. Am I saying there’s something in the works? No. Am I saying I’m open to having a conversation about it in the future? What’s the harm in that?”
Subsequently, CW President Mark Pedowitz had this witty comeback:
“If you wish to reconsider, I know a network that’d be willing to take you back. Fifteen years is a remarkable achievement. You will always have a home here and you will always have a fan in me.”
Truth be told, I wouldn’t rule out a Supernatural return sometime down the line – but I’m not sure what it could be until we actually see the series finale. One obvious possibility would be a reunion special or limited run of episodes similar to what shows like Prison Break have done in recent memory, or there could even be a movie made at some point. Heck, WB could make it live action or animated, and set it earlier on the series’ timeline if Sam and/or Dean don’t survive the finale. There sure have been enough novels published that have done something similar.
Supernatural returns with new episodes on Thursday, October 10th on The CW.
