After sitting through the politically driven fourth season of Supergirl, I sure am ready for the show to return to the glory days of its first two runs. Yes, Jon Cryer’s Lex Luthor proved to be an incredible addition to the villain’s legacy, but he was included in only three episodes. That said, it’s high time this thing gets back to being a series capable of giving The Flash a run for its money.
At the moment, I see no reason why we can’t remain optimistic for the next chapter of the saga. Especially after getting a look at it thanks to the first trailer, which can be seen up above. Hey, Saturdays at San Diego Comic-Con have always proven to be veritable buffets for Arrowverse fans, so why should this year’s event be any different?
Aside from the freshly revealed footage from season 5, there’s also a lot of hype surrounding Kara Zor-El’s new costume and haircut, which is on full display here – though it’s probably best we just focus on the latter for now. As you’ve probably seen within the past few days, the Girl of Steel has indeed jettisoned her skirt in favor of long pants. If Red Daughter were still around to see the new threads, then maybe she wouldn’t poke fun at her twin’s attire.
But first and foremost, it appears season 5 will focus on bringing Lena Luthor back from the abyss after feeling betrayed by learning of Kara’s secret from a third party, as Melissa Benoist told Entertainment Weekly:
“This season’s going to be a fight for Lena’s soul. I was devastated that it was Lex Luthor that told her. That was such a shot in the heart to Lena, a character that my character loves so dearly. It was painful.”
Supergirl returns with new episodes on Sunday, October 6th on The CW. And yes, Lex will return as well, as Cryer confirmed as much during the San Diego Comic-Con panel earlier today.
