It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia Review: “Mac And Dennis Buy A Timeshare” (Season 9, Episode 4)

Over the past 8+ seasons of It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia, one thing the Gang hasn't been short on is money-making schemes. From exploiting a water stain that looks like the virgin Mary to selling gasoline door-to-door, they're always looking for the quickest way to make a buck, and most of the time ethics don't play a factor at all. They also aren't the most discerning group around. Plenty of people have successfully duped them, and done it multiple times. With all that considered, it's actually pretty surprising that pyramid schemes haven't showed up in an episode before. But that all changed with this fourth episode of season 9: Mac And Dennis Buy A Timeshare.

Throwing Frank in the coil was probably just an easy way to keep him from saving the rest of the Gang from their stupidity in this episode, but I honestly can’t think of something funnier they could’ve done to accomplish that. Watching Danny DeVito stand crammed in a coil is hilarious, and the lack of an explanation makes it all the better. You’ve just got to move past it.

The highlight of this episode may be the couple of great minor characters brought back for this one. Ben the soldier and the Maniac made their first appearances in the same episode and now they’re back together, bringing their extremely different personalities to the episode. They serve as a great contrast to each other, and every scene they’re in is made all the better for it. Though they never do address when the Maniac got out of jail. But when the Maniac thinks he’s moving in with Dennis and Mac it’s absolutely hilarious. While it would be out of the ordinary for that plot to carry over to the next episode, I would be thrilled if the Maniac is still in their apartment next Wednesday night.

This is another great episode from the fine wine of TV comedies. (For those who aren’t sure, I’m referencing getting better with age, not any refined qualities.) It provides lots of laughs by finally capitalizing on a subject that’s primed for the humor and depravity of It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia. To move past this one to a better episode next week will be no easy task.

Other Random Notes

  • Where should I put my feet?
  • Other than Frank being stuck half-naked in a coil and the Gang trying to exploit Ben’s PTSD, they were relatively tame this episode.
  • Does Ben ever wear anything other than those jean shorts? Best gift ever.
  • Mac’s Hawaiian shirt brought flashbacks of fat Mac.
  • “Wait a second, he just subtly gestured to that document!”
  • “So is that the only super power you get, surviving the winter? Because I’ve survived many winters without these berries.”
  • The Gang really ought to take a video production class.
