Stranger Things Season 2 Gets First Image, Teaser Coming This Weekend

Few expected Stranger Things to be the phenomenon that it was over the summer. The Netflix original series — which fused together Steven Spielberg, Stephen King and John Carpenter, among other influences — was both a critical darling and a cultural obsession since the day it premiered, and it hasn't slowed down in popularity since. The second season can't come soon enough for many antsy viewers, and thankfully, they won't have to wait long. It's set to premiere later this year on the streaming site and understandably, Netflix is planning to promote it hard.

EW released the first image from the upcoming second season earlier today and announced that Stranger Things will debut a new teaser trailer during the Super Bowl this weekend. Netflix has the money to pull off a marketing move like this and it does make sense to show off a trailer during the biggest sporting event of the year in front of the biggest audience possible. We’re not sure how much footage we’ll ultimately get, but we’re excited to see it nonetheless.

While plot details are kept tightly under wraps, we do know that Stranger Things season 2 will expand things in a whole new direction and take place one year after the events of the first season, which means putting the kids in 1984. Oh boy. Cue all the ’80s references, like this image above, which finds our leads in their brightest Ghostbusters attire. That might not shock anyone familiar with the show’s brand of nostalgia, but it’s enough of a tease to get viewers ready to return to this heavily influenced world.
