Lucasfilm brought the house down at SDCC earlier this afternoon by revealing that, yes, Star Wars: The Clone Wars is officially making a comeback.
The announcement was made during the show’s non-Hall H, 10th-anniversary panel – a panel thought to be a quiet, reflective celebration of The Clone Wars and its many achievements between the years of 2008 and 2014. How wrong we were.
Just before things wrapped up, supervising director and all-around Clone Wars shepherd Dave Filoni confirmed that the hit animated series will be returning with 12 all-new episodes on Disney’s streaming service. Details of a release window weren’t disclosed at this time, but we still predict a late 2019 launch for this unexpected – but no less exciting – revival.
Because even after five seasons, there is still more story to be told, and it seems our prayers to the TV Gods have been answered. Still hasn’t sunk in? Allow this beautiful poster to do the trick:
Over on StarWars.com, Dave Filoni also offered a little more intel on The Clone Wars revival, along with the show’s long, meandering journey back to television. But above all else, Filoni thanked the fans – without whom none of this would be possible.
Personally, it’s very rewarding. Any opportunity to put the final pieces of the story in place is meaningful as a storyteller. I’m happy for the opportunity to define these things and the end of this part of the Clone War. It also makes me reflect on all the people that I got to work with over the years. It reinforces the things I learned from George. It reminds me of the important elements that go into making Star Wars. So, it’s nice on several levels, and I think for the crew that’s still here that worked on Clone Wars, they feel that, as well.
For the first time since the show’s unceremonious cancellation in 2013, The Clone Wars is headed back to the small screen. So get on Twitter and holler ‘#CloneWarsSaved’ from the rooftops.
