Move over MrBeast, Netflix has finally revealed the official release of its next reality competitive series, Squid Game: The Challenge.
This reality game show based on the popular K-Drama series will be released later this year, according to an official announcement made by the streaming service during its first upfront event. Deadline reports that Squid Game: The Challenge will contain 10 episodes, where 456 contestants will partake in challenges based on the games that appeared in the K-drama series for a chance to win $4.56 million.
Squid Game: The Challenge was shot in the UK and was produced by Studio Lambert, the same production company behind the Netflix reality show, The Circle. During the production of Squid Game: The Challenge, it was reported that the contestants’ well-being wasn’t heavily prioritized to the point where some players were suffering from frostbite and hyperthermia. Meanwhile, others were passing out, and there were even rumors that producers were prioritizing influencers, per Rolling Stone.
Netflix denied these reports, however, it was reported by Deadline that the production was faced with a Safety Watchdog review. It concluded with a reminder for producers to plan properly for risk and also noted that no further action was needed.
Ever since Squid Game‘s worldwide success, Netflix has announced multiple spin-offs based on the popular show. Asides from a reality game show, it was also rumored that Squid Game would receive an American adaptation. Squid Game: The Challenge will be released sometime in November 2023. So while we wait, viewers can still watch the original K-drama series on the streaming platform.
