Not that anyone should have been worried about this in the first place, but we now have confirmation that the insanely popular BBC show Sherlock will be receiving a fourth season. Currently, the third season is set to conclude in the UK while fans in North America are patiently awaiting the premiere on January 19th.
Starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, the current day re-imagining of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic literary characters has really struck a chord with audiences, delivering two brilliant seasons and building up an enourmous fanbase. Admittedly, season three hasn’t been quite up to par with the first two but it’s still excellent television and I’m definitely happy to hear that this is not the last that we’ll be seeing of Holmes and Watson.
The confirmation on the fourth season comes from creator Steven Moffat, who says that stories and scripts are currently being worked on. As for when we’ll see the next season, well, it may be a while. Season 3 took a long time to shoot due to the increasingly busy schedules of its stars. Since appearing on the show, Cumberbatch and Freeman have gone on to become big names in Hollywood and have their plates very full.
I imagine it will be at least another year and a half, if not two years, before Sherlock returns with a new season, so let’s just hope that season 3 doesn’t leave us on as big a cliffhanger as the last season did.
