‘Secret Invasion’ isn’t saving the MCU, but it did just deliver the franchise’s best one-liner

Maybe the single coolest thing Nick Fury has ever said.

Secret Invasion is a slow-paced and (so far) superhero-free conversation about refugees and race, so, unsurprisingly, it’s not doing The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Loki numbers for Disney Plus. Even so, we’re loving the heck out of it each week and looking forward to seeing how this saga impacts the wider MCU.

Its action scenes (such as they are) aren’t going to appear in any MCU top 10, though Secret Invasion makes up for that with sparkling dialogue and letting some of their best actors play off against each other in tense extended scenes. Episode two’s highlight was a testy conversation between Don Cheadle’s James Rhodes and Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury, which wrapped up with Rhodes firing Fury.

Then Jackson delivered Nick Fury’s best one-liner to date – heck, what may be one of the MCU’s best lines to date – “Even when I’m out, I’m in.” Check out some of the reactions on Twitter:

More killer dialogue like this please:

Right now, the Secret Invasion Nick Fury is still a shadow of his former self. He’s far from the physical threat he once presented in the 1990s and spends an alarming amount of time being shoved into black vans by hired goons. But we’re certain that each coming episode will show the dust falling away from this expert operative until he’s back to his butt-kicking best.

You can catch up on all of the Secret Invasion action on Disney Plus, where new episodes are dropping every Wednesday.
