Without a doubt, one of the biggest hits last year, in any medium, was Stranger Things. Netflix’s sci-fi/horror series came from seemingly nowhere and took the world by storm, hooking viewers almost instantly with its gripping and intriguing mysteries and likeable characters. Not to mention all the nods and references it made towards classic ’80s properties. As such, it was no surprise when a second season was announced for October of this year.
To date, we haven’t seen a whole lot from the next outing of Stranger Things, and fans are starting to get anxious. Apparently, the show is taking a page out of the Game of Thrones playbook when it comes to secrecy and keeping plot details under wraps. And while they have been doing a pretty good job of preventing stuff from leaking, the cast have now begun to open up a bit about what to expect, teasing a more horror oriented season when the show returns.
While speaking to People Magazine in a recent interview, star Finn Wolfhard mentioned that a darker sophomore outing’s in store for Stranger Things:
“There are going to be some challenges that the characters face that are real. That are disturbing. I think this season will be a lot more dark. A lot more horror oriented. I think people are going to like it more than the first season.”
Those comments are vague, to be sure, but they line up with what we heard earlier about a lot of time being spent in the Upside Down this year. Given that the more sinister elements of the show were among its highlights, we’re thrilled to hear that season 2 will be embracing those.
Elsewhere in the interview, Gaten Matarazzo hinted that all the characters are going to be “emotionally scarred” by what happened to Will last year and that they’ll be coping with it in their own ways.
“The great thing about this season is you get to see insights into each character on their own. You’re going to see a lot more into the lives of how the characters are coping with what’s been going on. I think they’re all very emotionally scarred. They feel alone because their best friend [Will] is back and he’s not acting like their best friend anymore. He’s changed.”
Stranger Things returns for a second season this Halloween. It’ll run a little longer than the inaugural season – up one episode from the original eight – and eagle-eyed viewers believe that Matt and Ross Duffer will once again cite Dungeons & Dragons as a potential plot point.
