Though filming on the third season of Scream reportedly wrapped last year, 2018 has almost been one long period of radio silence on this planned reboot of the slasher series. Fortunately, new reports indicate that this season is slowly edging its way towards the light of day.
To give a little context on the insanely long wait, Scream was previously scheduled to return last March, but when The Weinstein Company filed for bankruptcy as a result of last year’s widely publicized sexual assault scandal, the show was left in limbo. New reports, however, indicate that Lantern Capital had acquired the rights to Scream, along with other TWC assets. And since Lantern and Netflix have settled their dispute over distribution rights, that means Lantern is free to pitch the show to other networks and platforms.
At this rate, it may not be until next year that the show finally returns to screens, but at least we know that there’s some progress being made after months of uncertainty.
In any case, when this next season does come out, it looks to be bringing in a fresh cast, including the likes of C.J. Wallace, Keke Palmer, Tyga, Giorgia Whigham, RJ Cyler, Jessica Sula, Giullian Yao Gioiello, and Tyler Posey. Moreover, in an unexpected recent development, Candyman star Tony Todd took to Instagram last month to confirm that he’d been also cast in this season, raising the question of just how much new footage has been shot this year while the season awaits release.
It remains unclear when exactly we’ll get to see the new Scream cast in action, but at the least we’re getting updates again, and surely that’s better than nothing.
