Scream fans may have their sights firmly trained on Tuesday’s upcoming Halloween special, but we now have word that MTV has renewed the slasher-horror series for a third season.

There is one snag, though; when Scream does make its return, it’ll be for a six-episode run, whereas the previous two seasons have comprised 10 and 13 episodes, respectively. It’s understood MTV is also casting the net in search of new showrunners to replace Michael Gans and Richard Register, who will depart the series adaptation after season 2. This is the third showrunner change in as many seasons, considering that Gans and Register were drafted in to fill the void left by Jill Blotevogal and Jaime Paglia following Scream‘s inaugural outing. News regarding cast members and a premiere date are also being kept under lock and key at this time.

Though it was one of the early movie-to-TV adaptations to emerge onto the scene, Scream endured a lengthy development process in its path to the small-screen. Dimension TV is the studio behind the serialized offshoot, which was angled as a means of keeping the franchise afloat after the core film series was all but retired following Scream 4 in 2011. Even still, when you consider those lowly ratings that have blighted the TV spinoff, it wouldn’t be all that surprising if MTV’s teen drama was to join its cinematic brethren on the shelf before too long.

But enough doom and gloom; Scream‘s immediate future is secure with a truncated six-episode stint. Fans can look forward to the arrival of the Halloween special on Tuesday, October 18 at 9 pm, but what are your early thoughts on MTV’s renewal? Drop ’em below.
