The Wrap has word of seven actresses who are trying out for a major role on True Detective this week. According to an exclusive report from writer Jeff Sneider, those auditioning for the HBO drama include: Rosario Dawson, Jessica Biel, Brit Marling and Malin Akerman. Rounding out this list of potential tryouts include the lesser-known Jaimie Alexander (Thor: The Dark World), Oona Chaplin (Game of Thrones) and Kelly Reilly (Flight).
According to Sneider, these actors will be reading for Nic Pizzolatto, the creator and screenwriter of True Detective. Sneider says that Dawson is a favourite, aided by a stellar recent track record working on Danny Boyle’s Trance, Chris Rock’s TIFF favorite Top Five and Netflix’s Daredevil series. Meanwhile, being a Puerto Rican actor in a show that takes place in California (and where all of the other rumored stars are white) could be an advantage over the other choices, Sneider asserts.
The second season of HBO’s Emmy-winning anthology is not slated to air until at least next summer. HBO has not yet confirmed the cast, although Colin Farrell, Taylor Kitsch and Vince Vaughn’s names have circled the project for months now. While Rachel McAdams and Elisabeth Moss had their names rumored for a role on the next season, it is unknown whether they have passed on the project or this speculation has no basis in fact. Still, do not rule them out just yet.
Justin Lin is currently attached to direct two episodes of this True Detective anthology. Although plot details for the upcoming season are not official, word is that it will focus on a trio of detectives investigating a murder tied to a shady deal to build a high-speed railway across the state. Of those detectives, one of them is reported to be Ani Bezzerides, a local small-town sheriff known for her tough attitude and a penchant for drinking and gambling that stems from a damaged childhood. Farrell and Kitsch will likely play the other cops, although details are still hazy.
