Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Prequel Show To Take Place In Early Years Of The Rebellion

2019 is set to be the busiest year yet for the Star Wars franchise for reasons that go well beyond the release of Episode IX this December. For one thing, The Mandalorian is on course to be the first live-action Star Wars series when it arrives on Disney Plus, and based on a recent report from Production Weekly, filming for the upcoming Rogue One: A Star Wars Story spinoff series will also commence this coming October.

On top of that, a subsequent report from That Hashtag Show alleges the specific dates for the period of shooting, claiming that production for the Cassian Andor series will commence on October 28th, 2019, before wrapping on June 17th, 2020. Of course, even if we assume this info is accurate, these dates are still subject to change, but it sounds like the Diego Luna-led show is aiming for a late-2020 premiere.

THS’s source also shared a brief synopsis for the production which may not have a lot new to offer, but at least serves as a welcome reminder of the tone and the context of the series:

“The ‘Rogue One’ prequel will unfold in the early years of the Rebellion and is described as a ‘rousing spy thriller.’ Diego Luna will reprise his role as rebel spy Cassian Andor, the cocky daredevil who helped steal the Death Star plans in the hit 2016 movie. “

As it stands, plot details remain vague on the Cassian Andor show, though Rogue One: A Star Wars Story has already laid some groundwork for the prequel, not least by showing us exactly when and how the main character dies. From the sound of things, we’ll have most of two years to piece together further info on the series, but in the meantime, The Mandalorian will bring us into a relatively untouched section of the Star Wars galaxy when it premieres later this year.
