Aside from Jerome thankfully having survived the winter finale of Gotham, last night’s episode was undeniably a pivotal point for Edward Nygma, who took another bloody giant step toward his destiny when he brutally shot Penguin and left him to drown.
Now, the time has come to look forward to the show’s spring premiere, which will arrive at the tail end of a painful three month long hiatus. But, just as we further explored the Joker’s origins in recent episodes, the spotlight will turn toward Cory Michael Smith’s methodical, ice cold interpretation of Nygma in the appropriately titled, “How The Riddler Got His Name.”
Aside from seeing him take out his aggression on an unwitting Gotham City in the trailer, we get our first look at his sharp green suit, so feel free to pause and rewind to your heart’s content. Personally, I really dig his new look even though it’s not the final Riddler costume, per se. Basically, it’s what I would expect from a sensible, modern take on the character.
The knowledge that his fashion sense would evolve is something we only recently came into, and I can’t help but revisit a quote he offered to Cinema Blend when discussing it:
“It is performative; not in a Jim Carrey way. I want him to be kind of showy. So what we have as the Riddler costume is really classy, and that’s kind of what we wanted.”
Be sure to catch the spring premiere of Gotham when it makes its return on Monday, April 24 on Fox.
