As we head into awards season now, one television show that’s picking up an awful lot of buzz and recognition is the hit political thriller Bodyguard.
Starring Game of Thrones‘ Richard Madden, the series follows his character David Budd, who’s assigned to protect the Conservative party’s Home Secretary. Though it begins as a fairly routine job, he soon finds himself falling deeper and deeper into a web of corruption, deception and a plot to assassinate the very person he’s supposed to keep out of harm’s way.
With fantastic acting, tight pacing and non-stop edge of your seat thrills, Bodyguard presented a first season full of twists and turns that culminated in an explosive final episode which left viewers wanting more. However, there’s still been no word on if we’ll get another outing or not. Despite this, Madden remains hopeful, telling Ellen DeGeneres the following during a recent appearance on The Ellen Show:
“We hope [for one]. I mean we’ve been talking about it a lot,” he said on the talk show. “It’s kind of been quite mad this year, so we’ll have next year to throw some ideas around and talk. So hopefully so.”
Of course, that’s hardly confirmation that we’ll be seeing David Budd on our screens again in the future, but series creator Jed Mercurio seems optimistic about things as well, telling The Sun back in September that he can see the show lasting for at least three or four seasons if all goes well.
“It’s probably fair to say we would probably approach any thoughts of a second series with the idea that it would create an opportunity for a third or fourth,” Mercurio said.
Given how gripping and entertaining the debut run of Bodyguard was, it’s unlikely too many people would complain if it lasted for several more years, but just where things will go from here remains to be seen. Without spoiling too much, the first season more or less tied everything up, with no significant plot threads left hanging for a new run to pick up on. And though Mercurio has mentioned in the past that we could see David assigned to protect a member of the Royal Family in the second season, that remains unconfirmed.
