Pretty Little Liars Review: “Close Encounters” (Season 4, Episode 16)

Pretty Little Liars is essentially a giant web of lies. The entire series revolves around the idea of picking them apart, one delicate strand at a time, and hoping that you don't pull hard enough that someone notices, or worse case scenario, pulls back. In this case, that someone is known simply by one terrifying letter, 'A.'

The closer the Liars get to Alison, the closer ‘A’ gets to them, but whoever ‘A’ is, they might want to reconsider their current time table. It looks like the Liars are dangerously close to reaching their breaking point in a very Spencer (Troian Bellisario) ending up at Radley type of way, and that wouldn’t be a whole lot of fun for anyone to watch.

Besides handling the drama of everyday life, the Liars are now being sucked back into Alison’s manipulative infrastructure – and not everyone’s getting a personal invitation. Trying to figure out what game Alison is playing has always been a pointless venture, but on tonight’s episode they reached a new level – and once again Alison seems to be holding all the cards.

All this time the Liars assumed that Shana (AeriĆ©l Miranda) was out to get them, and she still might be, but there’s one thing they didn’t see coming – she’s been helping Ali. Apparently finding out that Ali was alive was only front page news for the Liars.

When Alison requests a second private meeting with Emily (Shay Mitchell) via Shana, I don’t blame Spencer for being suspicious. Just like Aria may be the weakest physically of all the Liars, Emily definitely wins in the emotionally compromised category. She didn’t just consider Alison her friend, she was in love with her, and in true Ali fashion, she’s uses that to her advantage.

If Spencer hadn’t have crashed the party, what else do you think Alison would have confessed? Do you blame Spencer for following Emily to the warehouse? Let us know all your latest theories on Pretty Little Liars in the comment section below!
