Pretty Little Liars Review: “Cat’s Cradle” (Season 4, Episode 3)

Pretty Little Liars is doing what it does best and is keeping us guessing all the way to the end in its usual frustrating fashion. Just when you think you have 'A' figured out, she throws you a curve ball from somewhere out in left field - and she isn't concerned about the consequences either.

We all know that ‘A’ gives as good as she gets. When she’s not busy tearing down families, she’s providing evidence to put one back together, well sorta.

In exchange for Mona’s (Janel Parrish) RV with all the juicy tidbits on the Liars, Toby (Keegan Allen) got a transcript from his mother’s doctor on the day of her “suicide.” Playing the supportive girlfriend role is ex-Radley patient Spencer (Troian Bellisario), who is willing to brave a return visit to crazy town in order to find out the truth, which may not be that easy to swallow. According to the facts, it looks like there’s a mystery here. No shock there. Who would have wanted Toby’s mom out of the way enough to kill her, and why would ‘A’ choose now to reveal that to Toby? This could just be another distraction, but somehow it’s all got to be tied in – it always is.

There’s always been an element of mystery about Melissa’s relationship with Alison. Actually there’s been an element of mystery surrounding just about anyone that ever knew Alison. It seems that no one she associated with are who they seem – Melissa, in particular. Melissa has been closely tied to every unsolved murder in Rosewood. She was married to Ian who found himself on the wrong end of a rope, good friends with Garrett who was murdered on the Halloween train, and a possible accomplice to Wilden who most recently bit the bullet. People around her don’t seem to be any safer than they are around the Liars.

Which brings us back to what ‘A’ has up her sleeve. Why the double agent act? Is it possible that ‘A’ isn’t really playing both sides and that part of what’s going on is someone else’s doing – someone that I like to call ‘the B-squad?’ It wouldn’t be the first time that there’s been more than one agenda being carried out at the same time. And, who was wearing the black mourners outfit at Wilden’s funeral? My money’s on Melissa. She’s the right build, has a questionable alibi, and is just dramatic enough to pull is off.

This episode of Pretty Little Liars is following along the same slowed down tempo, but it’s only a matter of time before the drama returns at full speed. Let us know in the comment section below what you think is coming on next week’s episode Face Time, and what your theory is on who killed Wilden!

Until next episode.
