The first full-blown trailer is here for the upcoming series Twisted Metal and it’s finally delivering on the promise of guns, cars, and mayhem that defined the game series it is based on.
The Anthony Mackie-starring Peacock original series had been fairly tight-lipped about showing audiences the world that Twisted Metal is set in up until now, with only a brief teaser showing some banter between Mackie and the iconic Sweet Tooth inside a casino and with no car in sight. However, it looks like the creatives behind the scenes were intentionally building up anticipation since we now have a deluge of some of the metal-crunching, flame-throwing, and gasoline-guzzling chaos that fans have wanted from the outset.
In addition to just the sheer mayhem of it all, the trailer also showcases the general premise of the show. Taking place in a world that went the way of the toilet, a post-apocalyptic U.S. features major cities that are walled off from each other, with the criminals kicked out to the no man’s land in between. It is up to a brave delivery driver, played by Mackie, to make the treacherous journey for key deliveries from one metropolis to the next, dodging the deranged roadsters en route.
Though I’m not the most versed in the lore of the Twisted Metal game franchise, I thought this latest trailer actually looked like a good bit of fun. There’s a bit of a Mad Max vibe to it all, with one scene featuring Mackie doing doughnuts in his car in an abandoned mall in the middle of a shoot-out looking like a particularly macabre bit of fantasy fulfillment that even Geroge A. Romero could probably admire.
I’ll be checking out Twisted Metal when it comes to Peacock on July 27.
