It’s been more than 16 months since Black Mirror fans have gotten any new episodes – if we don’t count last year’s Bandersnatch, that is – but thankfully, it looks like we won’t have to wait too much longer. While details are scarce, Netflix recently released a brand new promotional still for the show’s fifth season, which features a few familiar faces in a rather intense standoff.
In an exclusive article published by Entertainment Weekly, the outlet finally gave fans a first look at Black Mirror‘s next batch of episodes. The brand new image, which you can see for yourself below, depicts actors Anthony Mackie and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II staring each other down on a rain-slicked street.
Unfortunately, there was no context given for the pic, but series creator Charlie Brooker teased: “It’s the Marvel-DC crossover no one saw coming.”
If either of the actors mentioned above sound familiar to you, it’s probably because you’ve seen one of (or both) on the big screen at some point recently. Mackie, who made his film debut in 2002’s 8 Mile, is best known for his role as Sam Wilson/Falcon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, having appeared in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Avengers: Infinity War and Ant-Man, among others. He also starred in 2009’s The Hurt Locker alongside Jeremy Renner, otherwise known as Hawkeye within the MCU. Not to mention he’ll soon be seen in Falcon and the Winter Soldier, which is set to premiere on the Disney Plus streaming service later this year.
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is no slouch, either. After making a name for himself on Netflix’s The Get Down, he recently appeared in several blockbuster films, including Baywatch, The Greatest Showman, Aquaman, and Us.
Indeed, both men are tremendously talented individuals and it’ll be interesting to see what they get up to in Black Mirror. As mentioned above, next to nothing is known about the new season just yet, but we fully expect another batch of dark, grim and haunting episodes from the mind of the brilliant Charle Brooker.
