According to Deadline, Harris will have a “pivotal role” in the upcoming two-part finale. Harris had a short appearance in the show during the season two premiere. In the episode titled “Cool and Chill”, Sophie, played by Hilary Duff, accidentally crashes into a luxury SUV when she tried to leave a voice message to her mother, telling her that she might be “dating her dad.”

During the accident, Barney emerges from the van in his iconic suit and only said “dude” in disappointment. Unfortunately, his character wasn’t formally introduced when Sophie’s son asked future Sophie (played by Kim Cattrall) who the man was. She teased that he will be mentioned later in the story. Viewers know it’s Barney who owns the crashed vehicle as the license plates had the letters “LGNDRY” printed on them.

Barney isn’t the only character from How I Met Your Mother to appear in the spin-off series. Back in the season one finale, Robin Scherbatsky, played by Cobie Smulders, spoke to Sophie, giving her relationship advice in MacLaren’s. Also, the apartment where Ted, Marshall, and Lily used to live in throughout the original series made its return during the season one premiere.

Harris was part of the main cast in the original How I Met Your Mother series from 2005 to 2014. He played Barney Stinson, one of Ted’s friends, and was a serial womanizer. Throughout the series, he would slowly develop feelings for Robin and would later get married, then divorce after three years.

The season two midseason finale of How I Met Your Father will be on Hulu on March 28 and the show will return for the rest of the season on May 23.
