Meet Irving. You don’t know him yet, of course; he’s the latest addition to Mr. Robot‘s ensemble cast, a “laconic, no-nonsense used car salesman” to be played by the esteemed Bobby Cannavale.
Best known for his performances in Vinyl and hit bootlegging drama Boardwalk Empire, Cannavale is a major coup for the Showtime drama, and given the calamitous events at the tail-end of season 2, the possibilities for Irving are endless. For instance, is he another figment of Elliot’s imagination? Or will this sleazy car salesman (?) have a bigger role to play once Mr. Robot‘s third season boots online in October?
Those questions will no doubt fuel the fires of speculation in the weeks to come, but until we have firm answers for you to peruse, Showtime has gone ahead and unveiled our first true look at Bobby Cannavale in character, along with an all-too-brief teaser for season 3.
Also on board for the show’s latest instalment are Christian Slater, Portia Doubleday, Carly Chaikin, Martin Wallström, Grace Gummer, Michael Cristofer, Stephanie Corneliussen and BD Wong (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom) as the elusive Whiterose, who has been pulling the strings behind that nefarious Dark Army for the past two seasons. And if you happen to be a fan of Wong’s transgender character, you’ll be pleased to note that he’s since been promoted to series regular.
In the aftermath of season 2’s jaw-dropping finale, one in which Elliot (Rami Malek) was left to bleed out on the streets of NYC, what does the future hold for Mr. Robot and his hacking crew? Most, if not all of those answers will come when season 3 premieres in October. And given the show’s knack for secrecy and keeping its viewers in the dark (remember that mid-season plot twist last year?), we imagine Sam Esmail and his team still have a surprise or two in store.
