It proved to be one of the triumphs of Mr. Robot‘s inaugural season; the way in which series creator Sam Esmail delved into the tormented psyche of Elliot, a reticent hacker drawn into a digital power struggle between fsociety and the one percent of the one percent.
Rami Malek, the actor who so brilliantly brought Elliot’s plight to life last year, will reprise his role at the forefront of USA Network’s thrilling drama, and he’s already teased of how Mr. Robot season 2 won’t offer much let-up for our troubled protagonist.
Zeroing in on that fractured mindset, Jeff Wachtel of NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment revealed that the sophomore season will feature an “intimate” virtual reality scene. “We just shot a VR scene for ‘Mr. Robot,’” Wachtel told Variety. “It’s really about storytelling. It’s intimate and about the characters.”
Exact details of that scene remain under lock and key, though Sam Esmail did offer some insight into his creative process in an earlier interview with the outlet.
“I am so very specific in how I want to shoot the show and the visual grammar of how I want to tell the story. It’s nothing against our directors in the first season, because they were all great to work with. For me, it feels like it would be easier to manage day to day. I’m on the set every day anyway, and I just think it would make the whole show be more efficient.”
Also on board are Portia Doubleday and Carly Chaikin from season 1, rubbing shoulders with a host of newcomers that includes Joey Bada$$, Chris Conroy, Grace Gummer and Craig Robinson.
Mr. Robot season 2 will premiere via USA Network on July 13.
