Star Trek fans are overjoyed about the long overdue return of Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: Picard. The show looks set to reunite the beloved Next Generation captain with Data, Seven of Nine and (reportedly) Deanna Troi and Riker. But everyone’s asking one question and one question alone: where’s Commander Worf?
Michael Dorn’s Klingon security officer was one of the best things about The Next Generation, something proved by his going on to star in Deep Space Nine. But while he might be making a surprise cameo in the show, what really deserves to be greenlit is Worf Chronicles, Dorn’s proposed Worf spinoff.
In fact, the actor spoke about the status of the show at the Keystone Comic-Con in Philadelphia recently, saying the following:
“I am trying to get them to do my Worf pilot. I wrote it in 2012-13, and it’s been going like this: a lot of interest, no interest, a lot of interest, no interest.”
Perhaps getting in the way of a Worf show is that Star Trek: Discovery has radically reimagined the Klingons, most prominently changing their appearance. Now, the Klingons have famously had their look updated between The Original Series and The Next Generation, but it’s possible that Paramount would prefer the franchise stick with one appearance for the species going forward. All that might be a shame, though, as Dorn’s Worf Chronicles script is supposedly great. Marina Sirtis has seen it, in fact, and explained to the Comic-Con crowd the following:
“I read it and I called him up and said, ‘How did you do that?’ He had all the action stuff minutely detailed. I was very impressed with my best friend.”
It seems that there are Star Trek shows being greenlit left, right and centre at the moment, but let’s face it, what we really want is Worf. Let’s hope that Dorn gets a chance to don that iconic make-up one last time.
