Television seems to be all about revivals these days. Among others, we’ve had updates to Arrested Development, The X-Files, and Full House – and we have Prison Break still to come. Currently filming, for a revival on Netflix, is Gilmore Girls – which has long been speculated about, not least due to the apparent claims of series co-star Melissa McCarthy that she had not been invited to return for the special episodes.
Well, these issues have clearly been resolved, as Melissa McCarthy has confirmed that she will be reprising her Gilmore Girls role while recently promoting her new movie, The Boss.
Gilmore Girls was a popular comedy-drama series created by Amy Sherman-Palladino, which first premiered on The WB in October 2000. The show moved to The CW in 2006, before drawing to a close at the end of its seventh season, in 2007. The story focuses on Lorelai Gilmore (Lauren Graham), a single mother to sixteen year old Rory (Alexis Bledel), with whom she lives in Stars Hollow, Connecticut. When we first meet the pair, Rory is the age at which Lorelai became a mother, and the show explores their relationships with various other characters in the small town.
The Netflix revival will take the form of four 90-minute episodes, possibly each reflecting a different season in Stars Hollow. Almost all of the main cast have been confirmed as returning, including Graham and Bledel, Scott Patterson, Keiko Agena, Yanic Truesdale, Kelly Bishop, Liza Weil and Sean Gunn. Now that Melissa McCarthy has confirmed her return as well, we can look forward to catching up with her as Sookie St James, who is best friend and business partner to Lorelai Gilmore, as well as being an executive chef, wife and mother.
The date of the arrival of Gilmore Girls on Netflix has not yet been announced, and the production is set to continue through the summer. Also unclear is the number of episodes in which McCarthy will appear – particularly since, as she explained to Ellen DeGeneres, the complicating issue was apparently scheduling. All will be revealed, though, when the Gilmore Girls return.
