It’s been a pretty difficult time for fans of Marvel Television these past few weeks. While we’ve had the terrific news of a Loki TV show being in the works, Netflix has somewhat dampened that by bringing down the axe on both Luke Cage and Iron Fist. But it looks like it’s not all doom and gloom, as Marvel’s just announced that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will return for a seventh season.
This is pretty shocking to learn, as the show only just escaped cancellation after season 5 and the upcoming sixth outing was said to be its last. But it seems something changed behind the scenes and now, the series will live to see another season after this next one, with ABC ordering up a 13 episode stint. Details beyond that remain unclear at this early, early stage, but fans can rest east knowing that they have lots more of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. to look forward to.
As for what’s to come on season 6, well, we don’t know too much about what to expect just yet, but we can tell you that the premiere, titled “Missing Pieces,” will be directed by series star Clark Gregg and while he’s obviously returning behind the scenes, it’s still unclear if he’ll be back as Phil Coulson, after the fan favorite apparently died in the season 5 finale.
Given how important he is to the show though, and the MCU as a whole, it’s hard to imagine S.H.I.E.L.D. continuing on without him. Especially now that a seventh season is on the way. Then again, the ensemble cast has grown enough over the years to stand on their own two feet without Gregg’s fan favorite character. Plus, we’ve always got more Coulson to come in Captain Marvel.
Regardless, it’s great to hear that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will live to see a seventh season and as soon as we learn more about what’s in store, we’ll be sure to let you know.
