The Mandalorian and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story may have an entire trilogy separating them in the Star Wars timeline, but that’s not to say that they can’t share some common ground. For one thing, they’re both satellite works to this franchise’s main saga, but what’s more, this latest batch of set photos from Jon Favreau’s upcoming series indicates that we’ll be seeing the return of a certain type of baddie that Gareth Edwards’ film first introduced.
The pics come courtesy of MakingStarWars.net, and they show what are widely believed to be Death Troopers. These all-black figures made their screen debut in the 2016 spinoff film, and have since appeared in Star Wars Rebels, though The Mandalorian will likely mark the second time we see them in live-action form.
Also visible in these photos are some run-of-the-mill Stormtroopers, which would be nothing special if it weren’t for the fact that this series takes place after the events of Return of the Jedi. This placement in the chronology suggests that the show will shed some light on what happened to the Imperial Army after the fall of the Empire, perhaps even offering some insight on how the foundations were laid for the eventual rise of their obvious successors, the First Order.
That’s just a little speculation for you there, but if you’re looking for some actual news, these last couple of days have finally seen some casting announcements for The Mandalorian. The first of these was Pedro Pascal of Narcos and Game of Thrones fame, closely followed by Gina Carano from Fast & Furious 6 and Deadpool. In the wake of these two reveals we can hopefully expect some further details about the Disney Plus show to come our way shortly, so do keep watching this space.
